With a lifespan of more or less 45 days, black soldier flies are farmed indoors being fed with nothing but by spraying the room with a mist of water sometimes offered with sugar and they lay their eggs in crevices (between blocks of wood or between the trimmed cardboard layer which are harvested en masse and laid on a bed of moist cereal.

The larvae will hatch in four days and will feed on the cereal beddings (e.g. clean moist oatmeal. rice bran, soy bran, barley, wheat, and even bread crumbs, etcetera) After a little more than two weeks the larvae will self-harvest themselves as prepupae by crawling out of their beddings only to fall into the harvest containers.
